Best Saffron Supplements with Clean Ingredients For Calm, Mood and Focus

Bottles of best saffron supplements on display

Saffron is often called the gold of spices – and not just because of its deep orange colour and rich, earthy flavour. This powerful plant has been studied for its potential benefits for mood, emotional balance, focus, and even metabolic health.

The problem is, you would never realistically consume enough saffron in your cooking to reach the amounts used in clinical research. That is where supplements come in.

In this guide, I review the best saffron supplements made with clean ingredients – no unnecessary fillers, artificial additives, or hidden blends – so you can choose capsules or liquid drops that truly support calm, mood, and focus.

What are the benefits of saffron?

Antioxidant support

Saffron helps protect your cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Studies show it lowers oxidative stress while increasing antioxidant defenses. This is important because chronic oxidative stress is linked to aging and many long-term diseases. (1)

Blood sugar and blood pressure improvements

In people who are overweight, prediabetic, or living with type 2 diabetes, saffron supplementation has been shown to lower fasting glucose and blood sugar levels as well as reduce blood pressure.(2)

Mental Health Improvements

One of the most well-researched benefits of saffron is its effect on mental health. Clinical trials show it can significantly reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in both diagnosed individuals and those with milder mood disturbances. Some studies suggest saffron works similarly to certain antidepressants, possibly by influencing serotonin and other neurotransmitters. (3)(5) Beyond reducing symptoms, saffron appears to help people cope better with stress. (4)

Sleep quality

Research shows improvements in sleep quality scores and reductions in insomnia symptoms. Better sleep may be partly related to its positive effects on mood and stress regulation.(6)

Anti-inflammatory and respiratory support

In people with allergic asthma, saffron supplementation has been shown to lower inflammatory markers. This suggests it may help calm immune overreactions and support respiratory health, although more research is still needed.(7)

Saffron May Help Ease Mood Changes During Perimenopause

One study suggests that saffron may help support mood during perimenopause, particularly anxiety and low mood – two common symptoms during hormonal changes in midlife. In a 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 86 perimenopausal women, participants who took 14 mg of a standardized saffron extract twice daily experienced significantly greater improvements in psychological symptoms compared to those taking a placebo.

By the end of the study, anxiety scores decreased by 33%
and depression scores dropped by 32%.

However, saffron did not significantly improve physical menopause symptoms such as hot flashes or other somatic complaints. Importantly, the saffron extract was well tolerated, and no major side effects were reported, suggesting it may offer a promising natural option for supporting emotional well-being during perimenopause.(8)

What to look for when choosing a saffron supplement?

You should look for standardized saffron supplements containing specific, clinically studied extracts like Affron®Safr’Inside™, or SAFFR’ACTIV® to ensure the supplement is effective and high quality.

Standardization Percentage:  Many reputable brands use 0.3% safranal to ensure their capsules contain a verified, consistent level of the compound and 3.5% crocin (or 3.5% lepticrosalides).

Quality Labels: Check that the label indicates it is a Crocus sativus L. extract, often specifying the stigma.

Although many supplements offer 88.5 mg strength, most of the studies are done with 28 to 30 mg of standardized extract daily.

Best Saffron Drops

If you don’t like to swallow many capsules each day and want faster absorption, you might want to go for saffron drops. Most of them have many synthetic flavours and sugar added, but we found some good options.

Wild & Organic, Saffron Supplements

Wild & Organic Saffron Drops are a highly concentrated (88.5mg of saffron extract per serving)  liquid extract for those who prefer tinctures over capsules for faster absorption.  The drops are vegan, non-GMO, and sugar-free, with a naturally sweet taste from the glycerin. So it is not only healthy, but also tastes good.

While it excels in ingredient purity, high concentration, and value, it lacks the explicit clinical certifications and third-party testing.

Drops of Nature, Saffron Supplements

Drops of Nature Saffron Liquid is a bit weaker but a more affordable option. While it offers a convenient, fast-absorbing alternative to pills, I wish they did not use flavorings (even if natural and organic). More affordable, but fewer servings than other options. Great to add to your smoothies, juice, or even salad.
