Best non-toxic sunscreens you can buy in 2025

Best non-toxic sunscreen

The list of non-toxic sunscreens was updated on 16/04/25

There are a few rules when choosing the best non-toxic sunscreen.. Mineral sunscreens are much better for you if formulated with non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, but many people do not like them for a few reasons.

They are a bit thicker and, therefore, are a bit more difficult to apply, especially on darker skin tones. They are also more likely to block pores if you have oily skin. Some mineral sunscreens are very sticky and would be difficult to clean off leather or other fabrics.

After conducting a lot of research, here are the top non-toxic sunscreens we could find. The list will include mineral and chemical sunscreens. We have tested some of them and analysed reviews online (Amazon, brand websites, and Reddit). We were surprised that there are quite a few chemical, non-toxic sunscreen options.

Sky and Sol

Non-Toxic Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

Yuka score 93/100

Review: a sunscreen from natural ingredients that is reef safe and non-carcinogenic. It is a bit pricey. It also uses beef tallow, so it is not vegan. I wish the composition was without tallow, as it defeats any sustainability claims.  Although it goes against my beliefs and there are many great vegan options of sunscreen, I have still listed it as it is non-toxic.

DECATHLON ACTIVE SUNSCREEN SPRAY SPF 30

As there are not many reviews, I would love to try it and see if it is good. Even if I am a bit sceptical about a brand like Decathlon producing sunscreens, I will definitely be grabbing it next time I am in Decathlon.

The Worst Sunscreen Brands

The ingredients vary from product to product, but here is a list of brands that potentially use hazardous ingredients that we should avoid if we can.

SunBum, Equate Beauty, CeraVe, Australian Gold, Bondi Sands, Coppertone, Dermedic, Cien Sun, Neutrogena, Hawaiian Tropic, e.l.f, Soltan, Garnier, Malibu, Barbaria, Biore UV.

To summarise

When choosing a non-toxic sunscreen, it is so important to make sure we choose the one that protects us from the sun, but also doesn’t do more harm than good. We use sunscreen every day, so it is crucial to choose the one that is not harming us and the environment.
