After sharing my Plant-Based Certificate with my close friends and family, I got congratulations, followed by many questions, confusion and pushback.
It made me wonder why plant-based nutrition is still a bit of a tabu in Western society. And why do people hate vegans in general?
I was never a person who liked to fit in or needed anyone’s approval, so for me, these reactions were interesting but confusing at the same time. It made me think: how much hate do vegans get and why? Are people scared to become or continue to be vegans just out of fear of rejection or being mocked and hated? (1)
So, what are the main reasons people hate vegans for?
Living in London for years, I saw many people embrace plant-based options and become proud vegans. You would probably be stared at with disapproval if you ordered your matcha late with regular milk in Shoreditch. However, travelling through Europe, I realised how meat and dairy products are engrained into the culture. You will struggle to find vegan options outside big cities in most of the EU and US.
Veganism is not a big part of Western culture. In India, around 20- 40% of the population is vegetarian or vegan. More developed European countries hover around 10 to 12%, with vegans only 2 to 4 % of the population. As much as veganism is becoming more popular and talked about, it is still a minority (2).
After doing a lot of research and questioning, here are seven main reasons why people hate vegans :
1. Government and food industry confusion:

Just a few days ago, France banned using meat terms in plant-based products (3). You could be jailed or fined in Belgium for raising your kids vegan (4), and in France, it is classed as child neglect. However, the rules for school meals are improving in France. It was a legal requirement to serve meat with every school meal. Tt is now a legal requirement to serve at least one vegetarian meal a day under a new French climate change law (5).
With pushback starting from governments that are highly influenced by the massive meat and dairy industries (6)(7), the hate for vegans is becoming more apparent.
Even if most countries agree on the consumption of a variety of plants, a lot of them recommend daily amounts of dairy, eggs, meat and/or fish (8), leaving the ingrained image of vegans being very nutritionally unhealthy.
2. The media focuses on the negatives of veganism:
We have all seen at least one video of Piers Morgan hating on vegans and trying to say that drinking almond milk and eating avocados is much less sustainable than drinking cow’s milk and eating meat.
Most of the time, the Media covers extreme vegan activists throwing paint on paintings and listed buildings or focuses on very petty things like “Should a plant milk be called milk? “ or vegan sausage called a ‘sausage’ as well as covering a lot about meat substitutes that are junk food and distract the attention from whole plant vegan diet that is one of the most, if not the most nutritious and the best for your overall health and longevity.
With so much negative media coverage, it’s no wonder a lot of people find vegans and veganism annoying and even hate vegans.
3. Social and Cultural Norms:

Our celebrations and holidays include many meat and dairy products, with cheese and ham staples of most Western countries’ diets.
Summer is associated with meat barbecues and great times with friends. Poultry and eggs are symbols of holidays like Christmas and Easter. The best way to finish the week is a traditional Sunday roast dinner with chicken, beef, or pork at the pub.
People view veganism as challenging the best times with friends and family, leading to resistance or discomfort.
4. The taste and burden of modifying eating habits:
Planning meals with meat or fish is so much easier, and we are all used to it: you have your meat or fish as a protein, and you have a bit of carbs on the side, like potatoes or rice with some vegetables or a salad. You can buy seven pieces of animal protein, stock up on the rest, and you are sorted for the week. Planning only plant-based meals takes a bit more time and needs more consideration. If you do not want to end up with chickpea curry and beans on toast every single day. Vegan food needs way more understanding of nutrition, and you need to eat way more food to get all the nutrition you need.
Vegan food also needs much more practice and understanding of the flavours and textures to make things taste good. Pre-planning and stocking up on spices and souses like miso or tahini is essential.
5. Questioning and challenging your own values:
For many of us in the rat race of capitalism, razing children or caring for pets, trying to exercise, as well as trying to have a bit of social life, some things, even if important to us, do get pushed back on a priority list. Every single parent wants a bright future for their kids, cares about global warming and does (more or less) understand what implications the meat, dairy and fish industry has on the planet. People do not want to harm animals. But most forget about the worries of the future or animals and focus on how to feed very picky kids today, 3 times a day and rely on quick and easy family favourites like fish fingers and chicken nuggets.
Many people are so exhausted that they will choose convenience rather than animal welfare or consider future implementations on Earth.
Seeing vegans having time to implement the changes makes people feel conflicted and not trying enough, even if they care.
6. Feeling judged:
Negative emotions toward other people usually if not always, come from internal conflicts and self-doubt or feeling that you are not the best person you think you should be. Someone doing better in any of the parts of life—money, happiness, career achievement, better choices in life like nutrition—makes a normal human being feel bad about themselves.
Most people think that vegans judge meat eaters and that could be true, but most of the time, vegans care for animals and try to educate other people rather than judge them (9).
7. Lack of Information or questioning:
We all eat food every day but don’t necessarily stop to think about what this food is doing to our bodies or even where it comes from.
A lot of our understanding about nutrition is still based on very old data or myths that our moms used to tell us. You need to drink milk to get calcium, eat meat to get iron and drink fish oil to get your omega-3s. A lot of fitness influencers promoting protein powders every single day, “you need your protein to grow muscle, “do not help either.
We all forget to question where our food comes from and what are the consequences and a real costs for eating it.
I love how Dr. Gemma Newman explains this topic in her latest Instagram video, so if you have a few spare minutes, have a listen.
Conclusion
There are a lot of factors why people hate vegans. Our cultures, parents, and friends share food traditions, and veganism is challenging this. Fueled by media and confused by different government guidelines, people are sceptical. Probably the most infuriating is the internal conflict that vegans bring out in meat eaters.
I can definitely see more acceptance and more people getting educated about the benefits of plant-based diets. My conclusion is that whether we are vegan or not, we all care about our planet, love animals, and know that eating more vegetables is good for us. We have slightly different priorities or time in a day to think about it. I think, with a bit more time and education, people will stop hating vegans, and we all can live with no judgment no matter our food choices.
