We all know how important it is to drink enough water daily, especially in hot weather or during exercise. Water bottles have become functional daily items and statement accessories. They are also great for minimising single-plastic use and saving money.Â
With so many water bottle brands and different shapes and sizes, I wanted to explore the industry leaders.Â
Here are some criteria for choosing a water bottle that will last a long time.Â
- It has to be made from stainless steel or glass (I try to avoid plastic water bottles, except kids’ water bottles).Â
- Good quality materials and design are essential. You don’t want your bottle leaking, so it must close properly. Opening it for a quick drink is also very important. The easier it is to drink from your water bottle, the more you will drink. I like bottles with a straw, as you can drink way more water in one go.Â
- It has to be functional and the right size and shape. We are all individuals with different needs. Some people like a massive bottle to have on their desk. I move around a lot, so my water bottle must be small enough to fit in my backpack’s side pocket but big enough for water to last a few hours. It must also fit in a standard cup holder and be easy to clean.
- Last but not least—price. Better quality bottles cost more, but you don’t want to pay for brand or hope. I would argue that you can get a bottle of the same quality as Stanley for a much better price. Mind you, I do agree that they are worth the hype.

How often and what is the best way to clean my water bottle?
You should clean your water bottle daily to prevent the buildup of bacteria, mould, and odours, especially if you use it for anything other than water.
1. Daily Cleaning:
Use warm, soapy water. Wash your bottle with dish soap and a bottle brush, paying close attention to the inside walls, the cap, and any small parts, such as a straw.Â
Rinse thoroughly. Make sure all soap residue is gone before drying.Â
Air dry. Let your bottle dry entirely with the cap off to avoid trapping moisture, which can lead to bacteria growth.
2. Deep Cleaning (Once a Week):
Vinegar Solution: Mix equal parts water and white vinegar, let the solution sit in the bottle for a few hours or overnight, then rinse thoroughly with water.Â
Baking Soda: For a thorough clean, mix a teaspoon of baking soda with warm water, shake well, scrub, and then rinse.
Dishwasher: If your bottle is dishwasher-safe, run it through a cycle (check the manufacturer’s instructions).
3. Sterilization (Occasionally):Â
You can occasionally use boiling water or a specialized bottle sterilizer for deeper cleaning, mainly if you’ve been sick or use your bottle for more than just water.
Cleaning your water bottle regularly is key to maintaining a healthy, bacteria-free one!
