What I am realising after I hit 40 is that the same sun exposure that used to give me a glow is exactly what I’m now trying to avoid. Hyperpigmentation, deeper fine lines, and collagen loss accelerate during perimenopause, when estrogen levels drop, and skin becomes thinner and slower to repair. But I still want to look glowy. Not orange, not streaky, just healthy and less pale.
So I went looking for self-tanners that wouldn’t have any endocrine disruptors, synthetic fragrance, questionable dyes sitting on my skin for six to eight hours at a time. If we’re avoiding the sun to protect our skin and our hormones, it makes no sense to slather on ingredients that mess with both in different ways.
Below are the best clean self-tanning oils, drops, lotions, and mousses I could find.
TL;DR
Best Clean self-tanner brand: MooGoo – Minimal, low-tox formulations
Best Self Tanning Oil: TanOrganic Self Tanning Oil – Strong organic certifications
Best Self-Tanning Mousse/Foam: MooGoo Natural Tanning Mousse
Best Self-Tanning Lotion: Beauty by Earth Self Tanner Body Lotion – Best balance of value and skincare benefits
Best Facial Tanner: Tanologist Self Tan Hydrating Face Mist – clean ingredients and very affordable
Best Premium Self-Tanner: Pai Skincare The Impossible Tan Drops
This list covers the cleanest self-tanners split by category, because each one has a slightly different purpose.
Drops give you the most control, letting you mix the exact depth of color into your moisturizer or serum.
Oils deliver an even finish that works especially well on legs.
Lotions are the most forgiving for full-body coverage and the easiest starting point if you’re new to self-tanning.
Mousse (sometimes called foam) dries fastest and is great for quick full-body application without needing to wait.
Always read the application instructions of your self-tanning product, but in general, lotions and drops do not need to be rinsed off, while mousse and oils do.
- Parabens (methyl-, propyl-, butyl-, ethylparaben) - xenoestrogens that mimic estrogen in the body. Worth avoiding in midlife when hormone balance is already shifting.
- Synthetic fragrance / "parfum" - an umbrella term that can legally hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals, including phthalates.
- Phthalates (DEP, DBP, DEHP) - endocrine disruptors often tucked inside "fragrance." Linked to hormonal disruption in multiple studies.
- Formaldehyde releasers (DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, quaternium-15, diazolidinyl urea) - slowly release formaldehyde over time.
- PEGs and propylene glycol - penetration enhancers that can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a known carcinogen.
- Synthetic dyes (FD&C Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6) - added for instant color payoff. Skin irritants with contamination concerns.
- Mineral oil and petrolatum - petroleum-derived, can be contaminated with PAHs if not properly refined.
- DHA from sugar beets or sugar cane - the naturally-derived version of the active tanning ingredient.
- Erythrulose - a slower-acting natural sugar that pairs with DHA for a more gradual, natural-looking tan.
- Plant oils (coconut, jojoba, argan, rosehip) as carriers.
- Essential oils for natural scent instead of synthetic fragrance.

FAQ
Do I need to exfoliate before using self-tanner?
Yes, you do. To get the best results and most even coverage, you should exfoliate a day before using self-tanner. Use a brush or exfoliation mitt, focusing on dry areas the most, like elbows and knees.
How to get self-tanner off hands?
The best way is to wash your hands with soap as soon as you finish applying self-tanner. Make sure to use a tanning glove and brush for even distribution. You can also use a tan removal scrub.
What is the best self-tanning product for me?
It really depends on your preference. I like to use drops for my face as I can add them to my moisturiser and build the tan gradually. I have very dry legs, so tanning oils work great as it makes my legs tanned as well as looking smooth. If you are in a rush or are very impatient, go for mousse as it dries the quickest. If you are new to self-tanning, lotion is the most forgiving and is suitable for all body parts.
To summarize,
These self-tanning products will make you feel sun-kissed without damaging your skin and affecting your hormones. These formulations are amazing, but I want you to keep in mind that most of the products will give you a more subtle tan that you can gradually layer. My favourite are self-tanning drops, but if you are not sure, try testing a few clean self-tanning products like lotions, oils, and mousse, and see what you like the most. It does take a bit of practise, but I love how the self-tanning glow makes me feel more confident.
