When an ad for Cyperus Rotundus oil popped up on my Instagram feed, I thought it was a scam. Surely there is no magic potion that removes unwanted hair; I would have known about it. But when I did my research, I was surprised to see studies showing that it works. In this article, I wanted to touch on why we start noticing hair in places we don’t want during perimenopause, when Cyperus rotundus oil can be a great option, and to list the best-quality, clean products I could find.
TL;DR
Best overall: Caramela Beauty Cyperus Rotundus Oil – Includes supportive actives like Acetyl Tripeptide-1, plus jojoba, rosehip, aloe, and tea tree
Best budget: Uruses Cyperus Rotundus Oil – Excellent price-to-size ratio + Clean, straightforward ingredient list
Best premium: Your Cyperus Rotundus Oil – Lightweight and 3rd party tested
100% Cyperus Rotundus Root Oil: D’Or Moroccan Cyperus Rotundus Oil – test it on a patch of skin, as it can be irritating
I personally don’t mind shaving my legs, armpits, and the bikini area, but recently I started to notice light but very persistent chin hair coming out. I try to use my tweezers as much as I can, but ideally, I would not want to constantly think about it. As the chin is such a sensitive area, and the hair is very light, I thought Cyperrus Rotundus oil could actually work.
How Does Cyperus Rotundus Oil Work?
Cyperus rotundus (nut grass) essential oil does not dissolve or burn off hair. It slows the regrowth and thins the hair over weeks of consistent use after you have already removed it (waxing, shaving, epilating).
The flavonoids in the oil appear to have a mild antiandrogenic effect, meaning they interfere with the hormone signaling that drives hormonally driven hair growth. That is why it tends to work best on the kind of hair perimenopausal women struggle with – chin, upper lip, underarms, bikini line.
A randomized trial in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal found the oil reduced hair growth as effectively as Alexandrite laser, and was actually better at reducing white hair (Mohammed 2014). Later trials confirmed similar effects on bikini-area hair (Mohammed 2022), with minimal side effects.
One thing worth keeping in mind: not all Cyperus rotundus products do the same thing. The essential oil of the rhizome slows regrowth, but some extracts of the same plant have been shown to promote hair growth. So make sure you pick up essential oil, not a generic extract, as you might see the opposite effect.
One other thing I want to flag is that the clinical evidence so far is promising but limited to mostly one Egyptian research group, and we are still waiting for independent replication elsewhere.
What to look for when choosing Cyperus Rotundus Oil
Choose essential oil, not a generic extract, as some products can actually increase hair growth, which is why you might see hair-enhancing products with Cyperus rotundus.
No added irritants or hormonal disruptors – as you will be applying the oil regularly, you don’t want to add any ingredients that may disturb your hormones or irritate the skin.
This includes: Parabens, Synthetic fragrance / “parfum”, Phthalates, Formaldehyde releasers, PEGs and propylene glycol, Synthetic dyes, Mineral oil and petrolatum.
High Concentration – Cyperus Rotundus oil should be the only or the first ingredient in your chosen serum ingredient list. The more diluted the oil is, the longer it will take to see results, or it might be less effective.

Is Cyperus Rotundus Oil Safe for Hormones?
If you have seen videos warning that “antiandrogenic” ingredients might disrupt your hormones, you might be asking the same question I was asking. Based on the research, topical use is very unlikely to affect your hormones.
The oil works locally at the hair follicle – its flavonoids appear to block the conversion of testosterone to DHT right there in the skin, not throughout your body. Essential oils do not absorb through skin in large enough amounts to reach your ovaries, adrenals, or thyroid at significant concentrations. Across the human trials, some lasting 6 months, no hormonal side effects were reported – just occasional skin irritation or the smell.
When I would still be cautious:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding (standard advice for any antiandrogenic botanical)
- If you are on HRT, birth control, or spironolactone – not because there is a documented interaction, but because nobody has studied it
- Whole-body, daily, long-term use – the trials applied it to small, specific areas, so I would suggest being more targeted rather than bathing in the oil.
Bottom line: a few drops on your underarm, chin, or upper lip is safe.
How To Use Cyperus Rotundus Oil?
The clinical trials that showed results followed a specific protocol:
- Apply Cyperus rotundus oil right after hair removal (waxing, epilating, shaving, or a laser session)
- Continue twice a day, morning and night
- Leave on the skin – no rinsing
- Continue for 3 to 6 months of consistent use
What to look for in a product:
- A leave-on formula pre-diluted in a carrier oil (jojoba, sweet almond, or fractionated coconut oil). This is what the trials used and what is safe for all-day skin contact.
- If a brand insists you wash it off, that is usually a safety hedge for a more concentrated or undiluted formula.
Note: pure, undiluted Cyperus rotundus essential oil from an aromatherapy shop dabbed straight onto your upper lip or bikini line sensitive skin is far more likely to irritate.
Who should Use Cyperus Rotundus oil?
You should use Cyperus Rotundus oil if :
- You are looking for a natural way to help reduce unwanted hair
- You are looking for a useful tool for hormonally driven facial hair in perimenopause, used on an ongoing basis
- You suffer from light hair in the areas that are sensitive to shaving, like the chin or upper lip
- The laser does not work on light hair
- You want a maintenance oil to slow down the hair growth between waxing or shaving.
FAQ
Is Cyperus Rotundus Oil Safe for Hair Removal?
Yes, it is safe; test it on a small patch of your skin to make sure it does not irritate. Also, make sure to follow the instructions and only use the oil on specific small areas of your skin, and consult your healthcare provider if you have any doubts. Only use a good-quality product to prevent any contaminants or low-quality ingredients.
Does Cyperus rotundus oil work for hair removal?
Studies are showing that it works as well as users noticing the results; however, all the studies are done by one research group, and we need more human trials.
How long does Cyperus rotundus oil take to work?
Most participants started seeing visible thinning around the 8 to 12 week mark, with peak effect closer to 6 months, so it is not a quick solution, but a gradual hair thinning and reduction.
Will the hair regrow if I stop using Cyperus rotundus oil?
There are no studies following people after the 6-month trial of using the oil, but I would say the hair would probably grow back gradually.
To summarize,
Cyperus rotundus oil is proven to slow down hair regrowth, and it is not a scam as I originally thought, but some of the marketing can be a bit misleading. It is important to understand that it will not stop your hair from growing back completely. It is a great addition to your skincare and a good tool to slow down the growth, but like with most natural treatments, you need to be consistent and patient.
I will be trying out the Cyperus rotundus oil on my face and will share my findings with you. Have you used it? Let me know your results in the comments below.
