I have been researching red light therapy for a while now and have a few devices that I use regularly, including a Red Light mask, a Red Light Therapy Panel, and a Face Wand. I was thinking of investing in a full-body panel setup, but to be honest, I don’t have the space in my apartment. I was curious to see if any full-body red light therapy products aren’t too bulky yet still deliver the same results, and I came across red light therapy mats and pods.
For me, this is a great solution, as the red light treatment covers the whole body at once and you can combine it with other restorative protocols like yoga nidra or meditation.
TL;DR
Best overall: Megelin LASER&LED Light Therapy Mat – Most advanced spec in this list.
Best budget: BestQool Redot L – certifications and affordability make it the strongest entry-level Red Light Therapy mat
Best premium: MitoRedLight MitoPOD™ – 360° body coverage design
What to look for in a red light therapy mat?
When choosing a red light mat, there are a few things you need to look for.
- Probably most important are the wavelengths. The key to skin rejuvenation and body recovery is Red (630-680 nm) and NIR (810-830 nm) wavelengths (1).
- Amount of Diodes – the more lights there are, the fewer gaps there are in between the lights; therefore, more of your body is covered. LED lights give more wide, while lasers more targeted light source.
- Power density or irradiance – which means the more power delivered, the less time needed to deliver the required amount of light. The stronger the irradiance, the shorter the treatment time. As the red light mat sits very close to your skin, 30 mW/cm2 is a good start. If you use the mat further away, like hung on a wall, you might need slightly higher irradiance to achieve your goals.
- FDA-registered or approved mats offer more guarantees for the quality of the product; however, the mats do not require FDA approval, and I have included some options that are not FDA-registered but are sold by reputable brands with good reviews.
- Price is not as simple as getting the most expensive or the cheapest. It is more important in terms of value for the price. You don’t want a cheaply made red light therapy mat that will break after a few uses, and you don’t want to overpay for the brand.

Red Light Therapy Mat FAQ
Which wavelengths are best for red light therapy?
Red (630-680 nm) and NIR (810-830 nm) wavelengths are the most studied wavelengths and are proven to help with wound healing, skin rejuvenation, as well as muscle and joint pain. (1)(2)
How to use a red light therapy mat?
Each brand has different guidance on how long and how to use the red light therapy mat; however, there are a few things that apply to all.
- Make sure your skin and red light therapy mat are clean before use.
- Use red light therapy on bare skin as red light does not penetrate through fabrics.
- Use protective eyewear or close your eyes, especially when using NIR light.
- Let the mat cool before you wipe it down.
Can red light therapy help with joint pain and recovery?
Yes, red light therapy can reduce joint pain in the short term, but the recovery benefits are less studied (2). The key thing to remember is that all red light therapy devices sold to be used at home should be used as part of recovery and not replace doctor-prescribed protocols or medicine.
How often should I use a red light therapy mat?
Same as with red light therapy in general, the best results are when using a red light therapy mat every other day for the brand’s recommended period of time per session. However, it depends on the reasoning. If you want quick pain relief for your joints and muscles, red light therapy is proven to help. If your focus is on skin conditions or general wellness, you should use it regularly. Most studies find that using it every other day seems to be a sweet spot.
Should I buy a Red Light Therapy panel or a Mat?
It depends on a few things, including your preference, space, and budget. If you have a good amount of space and a budget that you can allocate to a red light panel setup, go for it. However, if you are short on space and want something more flexible, I would go for a red light therapy mat.
How to clean a red light therapy mat?
Wait for the mat to cool down before wiping the inner surface with a soft, damp cloth in between uses. Make sure you are not using too much water or disinfectant that could react with the mat surface, and always consult with the brand for more specific information about the usage, including cleaning.
To summarize,
Red Light therapy mats are amazing for full-body recovery and can fit in any home. They are great for people with chronic pain, athletes, or people who like to treat their whole body in one session. Yes, they might be less powerful than panels, but they are intended to be used very close to the skin, so they don’t have to be. I like Red light therapy mats as they don’t need a setup, do not occupy a lot of space, and can be stored away and taken with you on travels more easily than a heavy, bulky panel.
