This spring, the most talked-about jackets are barn jackets. You can see them everywhere, from runways to royals and celebrities like Kendall Jenner wearing barn jackets. But why are they so popular, and where can you buy one that will last you a lifetime and be a sustainable choice?

I will explain the reasons for the Barn Jacket’s popularity, what to look for when buying a barn jacket that lasts, and what brands have the most durable and natural materials and sustainable practices.

Although I no longer follow trends closely, this year’s most popular jacket caught my attention. A good-quality barn jacket could last a lifetime and stay in style.

What is a barn jacket?

A barn jacket is a type of outerwear originally designed for working outdoors, particularly for farmers. It’s a versatile, practical jacket characterized by its durability, simple design, and functionality. While it began as workwear, it has become a popular casual fashion staple. Here are the key features of a barn jacket:

  1. Durable Material: Barn jackets are typically made from heavy, hard-wearing fabrics like cotton canvas, twill, or waxed cotton.
  2. Quilted or Fleece Lining: Many barn jackets have a quilted or fleece lining for warmth, making them suitable for cooler weather.
  3. Corduroy Collar: A signature feature of many barn jackets is a contrasting corduroy collar
  4. Large Pockets: Barn jackets often feature multiple large, deep pockets.
  5. Snap or Button Closures: While some jackets may use zippers, barn jackets typically have snap or traditional buttons for easy closure.
  6. Loose Fit for Layering: Barn jackets generally have a boxy or loose fit, allowing for comfortable layering over sweaters or other clothing.

Barn jackets are popular for several reasons:

  1. Durability: Originally designed for farmers and outdoor workers, barn jackets are made from tough, weather-resistant materials like cotton canvas, waxed cotton, or sturdy twill. They are durable enough to withstand the elements, making them ideal for outdoor activities.
  2. Warmth: Barn jackets often have a quilted or insulated lining that provides warmth without being too bulky. This makes them perfect for layering in cooler weather.
  3. Timeless style: With their simple, classic design, barn jackets have become a staple casually. They often feature muted colours, corduroy collars, and a slightly oversized fit, giving them a timeless, rustic appeal.
  4. Versatility: These jackets are versatile enough to be worn in various settings. Whether you’re working outside, hiking, or running errands in the city, barn jackets can adapt to different situations.
  5. Cultural association: Barn jackets are often associated with outdoor, rural lifestyles and heritage brands, giving them a cachet. Many people are drawn to the connection to a more grounded, authentic, or “outdoorsy” image.
  6. Comfort: Despite their ruggedness, barn jackets are designed to be comfortable for extended wear. They’re usually loose-fitting, allowing for easy movement, and often get softer and more comfortable over time.

Their combination of functionality, heritage appeal, and enduring style keeps them popular across various demographics, particularly those who value practicality and fashion.

While barn jackets were initially practical workwear, their association with British royalty, especially through brands like Barbour, has elevated them into a symbol of timeless, sophisticated country style. This connection to the royals has helped solidify their place in fashion as functional and elegant outerwear.

Where to find a good-quality barn jacket?

If you want a good quality, sustainable material barn jacket, Zara is not going to cut it. Of course, it would be best to find a good-quality vintage barn jacket, so make sure to check out Vinted or Poshmart or a vintage shop near you for Vintage Carhartt or Barbour barn jackets.

If you have no luck, here is a list of good quality barn jackets that will last you a lifetime:
